It was around the 2000s when webcomics were getting popular that she discovered them. But then she got into comics and thought I can do more drawings and have my stories in that format.Īs a kid, Jen Wang did not read much of Western comics though she was reading newspaper comics by the likes of Bill Watterson the author of “Calvin Hobbes.” However, it was not until she was in high school that she read her first proper graphic novel. She imagined that the best of both worlds would be writing an illustrated novel and for a long time she was going for that. For the most part, she focused on prose fiction and from time to time she would dabble in drawings. Before that, she was doing writing and drawing separately but was getting pulled in different directions. She read a lot but it was not until she was in high school that she got into Manga and discovered that he could combine her love for writing with drawing to make comics. As she grew into a teenager, she discovered young adult novels and would spend a lot of time reading these even though she did not know these were called YA until about a decade ago. Wang thus developed a love for drawing and visual stories from a very young age. Growing up, writing and reading was a huge part of her childhood as her mother always had a lot of picture books all over the house and also took them to the library whenever she had the time. Jen Wang is a comics book author from Berkeley, Oakland but she was born and raised in California.
I have to say that I’m quite old-fashioned. Of course he may change that tradition, but at the same time that tradition takes for granted all that came before it.” In your view, have today’s writers changed literary traditions for better or worse? I don’t think a man can do much by himself, since after all, he has to use a language, and that language is a tradition. But I suspect that every generation rewrites, with very slight variations, what the other generations wrote. In 1981, you conducted a lengthy interview with Jorge Luis Borges, where he says: “Personally, I suppose all writers are writing the same book over and over again. Before her mother was murdered, Kelsey was fun, outgoing, exc. She's not naive, but her experience is basically non-existent. There were also numerous spelling errors. everything happened just like you'd want it to, without many twists and turns. Review 2: I enjoyed the book, though it was fairly predictable at times. It wasn't bad but i could have been a lot better. I think the story had a lot of potential to be good but something was missing. But once you've read something you find perfect you can't help but find others lacking in comparison.I felt the whole relationship was very rushed and i wish more time had been taken instead of rushing into things. Review 1: I think if i had read this book before beautiful disaster by jamie mcguire i would have liked it much more. What I didn’t expect though was Reinhart’s injury which also leads to him being grumpy and moody. And I was right except The Beautiful Pretender is more realistic set in historical times, specifically the year 1363, added with a bit of retelling from other fairy tales. Thoughts:Īs soon as I read the opening scenes where Reinhart hunts the wolves, I sensed the retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Something sinister that could have far worse-far deadlier-consequences.
